About I-CAN! EFILE™

In 2002, the Legal Aid Society of Orange County (LASOC) created and began to deploy I-CAN!™ E-FILE, a free Interenet-based tax assistance program for low-income workers.

Since the 2002 tax year:
  1. LASOC has operated I-CAN!™ E-FILE with a 30% average increase in usage and dollars returned per year.

  2. I-CAN!™ E-FILE has returned more than $33.3 million in federal returns to taxpayers in 49 states nationwide. Of that amount, more than $17.4 was in the EITC.
Through the LASOC's strengthened partnerships with community organizations, local governments and business entities nationwide, I-CAN!™E-FILE served communities and individuals located in California, Montana, Michigan, Washington and New York in the 2007 tax season.

Among LASOC's I-CAN!™ E-FILE partners and supporters include the First Lady of California Maria Shriver, the Orange County United Way, the City of Irvine, the One Stop Center of Orange County; former US Treasurer and current California Secretary of the State and Consumer Services Agency Rosario Marin the City of Santa Ana, Wells Fargo Bank and Union Bank.

In the 2007 tax season:
  1. I-CAN!™ E-FILE program filed taxes for more than 13,275 low and moderate income persons nationwide; and

  2. I-CAN!™ E-FILE brought in more than $17,767,110 million nationwide, of which $7,067,714million was in the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); and

  3. I-CAN!™ E-FILE brought in more than $6,808,358 million in California, of which $3,528,370 million was in the EITC; and

  4. I-CAN!™ E-FILE returned $2,577,591 to 1,782 taxpayers in Orange County, of which $1,312,658 was in the EITC.
